How often should I do neurofeedback ?

The best results when doing neurofeedback training is when you do 1-3 times a week, whereas multiple times a day might not yield any better results than once a day.  But more importantly, consistency is key.

We have often seen clients come in to our Neurofeedback Training clinic in NY & LA very consistently for a full course of training (15-30 sessions), never missing a week.  Overall, they're results are more dramatic and we see great improvement in multiple areas.  On the other hand, clients who tend to skip weeks more than a few times usually end up less than pleased with their end result.  The reason is the brain never got a full chance to learn a new habit: one of regulation.

*Melissa was someone who came in weekly and consistently.  She completed a full course of training at a little over 20 sessions.  Melissa came in because she had read about the positive effects of neurofeedback in Bessel Van Der Kolk's book "The Body Keeps the Score."  She was most interested in lowering her anxiety levels and reactivity, and potentially looking at how some physical ailments might change as a result as well.  In looking at her symptom checklists from before and after, we can see large shifts that occurred training from March to October.

Melissa reported them too: the biggest shift she noticed was feeling more responsive and less reactive, a usual effect as the nervous system learns to come into regulation.

However, when we look closely at her lists, many other areas shifted as well that may have been less expected.  For instance her intestinal/gut concerns, body pain/fatigue/stiffness, headaches, and being blocked on words, all showed great improvement.  They went from 6-8 to 2-4 (10 is most severe and 0 is most mild.) Additionally, her overall anxiety level went from an 8 to a 3.

Consistency is needed to train our brains to use new, healthier habits, instead of old outdated ones.
